Student Life – Well-provided for, yet still independent

students life

What does an average day look like in the life of a UAS student? The course schedule gives the day a certain rhythm and ensures that students stay on top of things and do not waste time on administrative matters which they could spend on their studies. The application and acceptance procedure eliminates any waiting for places in courses and the fight for a seat in a lecture. Yet students naturally have the right to and the desire for a life outside of completing the required curriculum. This is where the location of the UASs comes in.

Atmosphere: cosy or urban?
The atmosphere of studies at a UAS varies from location to location. In a large city, it makes no difference if the University of Applied Sciences is located centrally or on the outskirts. In both cases, the varied cultural offering and the large selection of pubs and restaurants in the metropolis provide for variety and diversion.

If the UAS is located in a rural area, it is most likely the numerous outdoor sport activities that complement and enrich student life. Student communities and a feeling of solidarity can be formed in both situations. UAS courses of study which are at home in a newly established campus offer students something which is close to its own little universe: places to study and ones for social interaction – all under one roof. The cafeteria, computer labs and internet access via WLAN which is free of charge frequently make daily student life easier. There is always a place to be found where one can learn independently or prepare for an exam in a small group.

Leisure time: events and special rates
Universities of Applied Sciences often negotiate special reduced rates for their students with cultural event managers, sports centres and pub and restaurant owners in the near proximity. Public transport can also often be used at special prices. Well-loved are also events organised by UASs, one of the classics being the “Semester Opening”. Other events in the student calendar: various job fairs and competitions. Sporting events such as football tournaments or ski days ensure that not only students’ brains are exercised but also their muscles.

Living: finally independent
In many cases, studying means saying good-bye to home. In urban areas, most UAS students share flats with others. In rural regions, there is almost always a student dormitory located close to the UAS. However, no prospective student is left on their own to search for accommodation: The UASs also offer support in this area. Some have set up their own accommodation platforms on the Web. And introduction days help students to quickly get oriented on campus.

Finances: support available
State grants and other types of aid exist for anyone who has difficulty financing their studies. Some Universities of Applied Sciences can even also offer performance-related grants made possible by cooperations with businesses. Of course, there is also the option of getting a student job to improve one’s financial resources, which can also help one’s CV if the job is related to one’s studies.
