Satisfying all one's needs - effortlessly

There are many paths that lead to an academic degree, and at Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences, they are tailored to the personal life circumstances and needs of the students. Whether the wish is to focus fully on one’s studies by studying full-time, to get a degree in an extra-occupational programme, or to get a bachelor’s, master’s or MBA in a distance study programme which is location-independent: there are efficient and professional forms of study for every situation in life that do not simply take the needs of business into account. And thanks to committed instructors who have modern means of communication available – and use them –, the academic advising of students who are only occasionally or hardly ever physically present is at exactly the same high level for full-time students. Three students report:

Felix Drucker, Full-time Studies
When Felix Drucker started the bachelor’s programme “Management & Entrepreneurship” at the FHWien University of Applied Sciences of WKW, he had already gained experience in earning qualifications in an extra-occupational course, which is exactly why he chose a full-time study programme. “At that point in time, I had already worked for six years in gastronomy and got my vocational school-learning certificate in an extra-occupational programme on the side,” reflects the twenty-six-year-old. “I wanted to do my studies at the UAS in the full-time programme because I simply wanted to concentrate fully on learning and get the most out of my studies.” Which he also managed to do. “I made six good friends here. We grew quite close together and helped each other out, and you simply get swept up when the others are learning,” he reports. In addition, his full-time studies made it easier for him to study abroad for a semester – an opportunity Drucker gladly took advantage of: “I spent a semester in Australia and even got a scholarship which 30 others had applied for – the UAS offers its students really great possibilities.”

Dominik Haider, Extra-occupational Studies
Dominik Haider was already well-established in his job – even without an academic degree: “I had a good job and quickly climbed the career ladder even though I didn’t have a university degree,” reports the student in the extra-occupational programme “Technical Sales and Distribution Management” at the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna. “But when I was working in an international enterprise, I quickly noticed that there is a boundary, and the only way of getting past it is with an academic degree.” This is why the thirty-year-old then decided not only to get his secondary school-leaving certificate but also to start studying – and at a fast-forward pace: “I got my secondary school-leaving certificate in record time after a year of educational leave in June 2016. In September of the same year, I started a new job and began my studies at the same time.” He has been studying since then while doing a 40-hour job in distribution in the field sales force. “I’m usually at the UAS two to five times a week in the evening,” he explains. He gets support in managing his  massive workload not only from his partner but also from his university: “My UAS places a lot of value on helping students who didn’t get their school-leaving certificate in the usual way. They’ve helped me every step of the way,” says Haider. “For example, the instructors are flexible when an exam date is hard to make or they make an exception when there is a due date – if I have a good reason.”

René Dusa, Distance Study
René Dusa is an expert – as far as studying at a UAS is concerned: After getting his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in “Business Informatics”, the thirty-nine-year-old is now doing a master’s in “Business Psychology” in a distance study programme – and he knows how to use his career situation efficiently: “I do shift work as a system administrator for major clients, and when I’m on call, I use the breaks to study.” The option of doing a distance study programme is perfect in his case: “I’ve been working since I was 15 and have had a family for a long time now – I’m not missing out on student life,” he laughs. There is no lack of exchange between himself and his fellow students, though: “We communicate daily on the online campus, whether about general questions or about classes.” The communication with instructors works well for Dusa, too: “The instructors are always available on the online campus, too, and you always get an answer in one or two days, mostly faster.”
